Basra oil field no longer included in Iraq's second bidding round

A small gas field in Basra has been removed from a list of 11 fields being offered for bidding in Iraq's second round of postwar bidding.

According to yesterday's reports, Iraq's state run South Oil Co. will instead develop the Siba field rather than putting it up for bidding. According to Abdul-Mahdi al-Ameed, a top Iraqi official overseeing oil and gas licensing in the region, Iraq has the ability to develop the small field itself.

The remaining 10 oil fields now have nine international oil companies ready to take part in the second round of bidding, set to begin later in the year. The second round follows on from the first, which ended last month with only one deal made to develop a single oil field.
