Sales and the 'Talent Magnet'

A lot is written about being a ‘Talent Magnet’, either as a company, or as President. It’s all good practice – listen, mentor, reward, provide clear goals and career maps. Good practice for the employer, but what about the employee?

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation at Jubail houses possibly one of the largest petrochemical complexes in the world. The corporation comprises of numerous independent petroleum refineries each manufacturing a variety of petrochemicals, related products and refined petroleum.

Project Brief: Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Company Limited

Type of work carried out - Temporary supply of compressed air to supplement implementation of isolation valves in the plant instrument air system.

Duration of project - Mobilization, installation & commissioning - 1 week

Testing - 2 weeks

Final supply to plants - 1 week

De-mobilization - 1 week

Saudi Kayan is one of the latest petrochemical complex which specializes in the manufacture of ethanolamines, ethoxylates, polyolefines, polyethylenes, phenol, cumene and polycarbonate.

Byrne was engaged to provide strategic support of providing heavy duty isolation valves on the Instrument air header during commissioning and to install the entire air supply to the plant instrumentation from an alternate facility. Byrne has an advantage in terms of being located near the plant, in the Royal Commission area with adequate equipment backed by a 24 X 7 service commitment.

Byrne also has a valid SABIC registration and is already providing support services to various SABIC and non-SABIC entities in the vicinity. During the series of technical discussions, whole system dynamics was designed and mutually agreed upon.

The scope of supply covered 6 plants within the complex of Saudi Kayan -

1. U&O Plant: Compressed Air Package as per the compressed air layout given with all necessary interconnecting hoses

2. Olefins Plant: Compressed Air Package as per the compressed air layout given with all necessary interconnecting hoses and using multiples of compressors and dryers and air receiver.

3. EOEG Plant: Compressed Air Package as per the compressed air layout given with all necessary interconnecting hoses and equal capacity compressor as standby connected with necessary valves and manifolds to the dryers.

4. PP Plant Compressed Air Package as per the compressed air layout given with all necessary interconnecting hoses and equal capacity compressor as standby connected with necessary valves and manifolds to the dryers.

5. Phenolics Plant: Compressed Air Package as per the compressed air layout given with all necessary interconnecting hoses and equal capacity compressor as standby connected with necessary valves and manifolds to the dryers.

6. PC Plant Compressed Air Package as per the compressed air layout given with all necessary interconnecting hoses and equal capacity compressor as standby connected with necessary valves and manifolds to the dryers.

The segregation of the equipment supplied was -

* 8 x 100% Oil Free Compressors
* 34 x Technically Oil Free Compressors
* 17 x Desiccant Dryers
* Manifolds and heavy duty hydraulic hoses with special crimping to remove accident risk.

All units supplied at each plant were with one as stand-by to ensure 100% availability since the process was extremely critical.

To run the equipment, Byrne supplied 24 operators, 12 per shift. The operation was continuous.

The work was more of a specialized service intensive project and it was carried out to the entire satisfaction of Saudi Kayan with zero LTI.

Normal air supply to the plant was successfully restored after completion of the project.

This was a first for Byrne and has gone a long way to establish the company's credibility as a first rate solution provider in the Oil & Gas Industry.
